The Grand Total

I've been furiously working on taxes, finally got that done last night. As part of that process, I tallied up the final cost of our adoptions of Valentina and Sergey. Total adoption expenses from 2007-2009 were:

$48,640.88

Ouch!

I am now trying to pick-up my tongue off the floor. But we'll probably come in close to 25K for one. Yikes. Good thing there is the Federal Tax credit. I look forward to that for next year. Although I heard a rumor it is going to expire in 2010.

Thanks for the call the other night. We enjoyed catching up!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, you're not alone. Our total adoption expenses for our two bosy in 2007 were in the same neighborhood - by that I mean within a few hundred bucks. This is one of the main reasons I ALWAYS caution parents about counting on the government tax credit to fund their adoptions. Our claimed expenses were more than double the allowed credit, which of course, is never claimed all at once.

We haven't done the final tally yet, but ours will be up there too! Even with our adoption grant! We are so thrilled to be getting tax refunds for the next five years however...LOL! Praying things are going well with you!

Wow! Just WOW! As you have looked over your receipts, can you tell why it was so much more expensive that what you read elsewhere?

Cindy I have also been interested in seeing that. I haven't broken it down by category yet. I will do that next week and post it. I just itemized all expenses in Excel in chrono order by year to get the yearly totals to give to our CPA.

that's A LOT of money! Isn't it the best 48 grand ever spent though?!

Wow! We are early on in the process of adopting an 11 year old boy--we had been told to figure on costs of $25 K, but budgeted an extra $10K for contingencies. Now I see we are $15K short!! And I didn't know that the credit will expire in 2010...I will be interested to see the breakdown. Thanks for all the great info on this blog. Alycia Goody and John Davies

Thanks for your comment, we didn't know the actual name of our orphanage and I misspell everything anyway. I haven't been able to read through your blog yet, but I'm so impressed with all the links and information you have! It's amazing. It is great seeing pictures you took of the orphanage. I would love to know if your kids knew Tatiana, Victor and Anastasia.

We aren't done yet, but our total looks very similar to yours : ) not including frequent flier miles.
